Nanophotonics and Quantum Optics

A continuation of the Alumni Focus Group Nanophotonics, the Focus Group Nanophotonics and Quantum Optics aims to explore, develop and optimize structured semiconductor devices in order to create new types of nonlinear optical devices and to investigate their use for the efficient generation, frequency conversion and detection of single photons used in quantum information technologies.

Therefore, the fellowship deals with the experimental realization, testing and optimization of new classes of non-linear quantum photonic structures to control photon-photon interactions and generate high-quality non-classical light. Hereby, the experimentally fabricated and investigated systems include AlGaAs and Ga(In)As photonic nanowires, nanowire resonators, single quantum dots coupled to 2D photonic crystal bi-modal cavities or cavity arrays as well as electrically tunable quantum dot molecules coupled to single cavity modes.

The research applies ultrafast optical spectroscopy techniques to probe quantum nonlinearities and coherently control quantum states in semiconductor nanosystems. This will further develop new strategies to create, distribute and detect quantum states of light and explore their use for emergent single photon quantum technologies.

Prof. Jelena Vuckovic (Electrical Engineering, Stanford University) is a Hans Fischer Senior Fellow in the Focus Group Nanophotonics and Quantum Optics, hosted by Prof. Jonathan Finley (Walter Schottky Institute).
