How do cells control the structure of the proteins they produce? How are defective proteins recognized and degraded instead of having potentially harmful effects on the organism? Which molecules and mechanisms underlie this molecular quality control? These are major questions that drive the research in the Focus Group for Cellular Protein Biochemistry, which has been headed by Rudolf Mößbauer Tenure Track Professor Matthias J. Feige since March 2015. A particular emphasis of Professor Feige’s work is laid on secretory and membrane proteins. These protein classes play an important role in the interaction of cells with their environment, e.g. in the human immune system, and failures in their biogenesis are involved in many different human pathologies. Insights into the principles of cellular quality control might thus ultimately be translated into new biomedical and biotechnological applications.
