Physics with Effective Field Theories

Andreas Kronfeld was a senior scientist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, USA and Hans Fischer Senior Fellow at TUM-IAS. He and his TUM host Prof. Nora Brambilla composed the Focus Group “Physics with Effective Field Theories”.

This Focus Group aimed at developing an effective field theory description for physical systems that contain several different energy or momentum scales. Such systems are the rule, rather than the exception, in many domains of physics, including particle physics, nuclear physics, and condensed matter physics. Our research targets innovative ideas in particle and nuclear physics and envisages spin-offs to condensed-matter and atomic physics.

Brambilla's group in the TUM Physik Department has extended the scope of effective field theories in particle physics for several years, especially in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Kronfeld's expertise is in lattice gauge theory, which formulates quantum field theory on a grid in spacetime. This approach enables a numerical treatment of QCD that has made great strides in the past decade. With this Hans Fischer Senior Fellowship, they plan to explore the innterplay of effective quantum field theory and numerical lattice gauge theory and, thus, nurture two of the most powerful theoretical tools and brings them together in a fruitful way.
