Jia Chen

Scientific Report on TUM-IAS Fellowship

Our research tackles two of today’s most urgent challenges: climate change and air pollution. My group and I have not only developed new types of sensors, but also carried out research on interdisciplinary issues, including the development of novel mathematical methods and atmospheric models. We have initiated two pilot projects, unique in the world, to quantify urban greenhouse gas emissions and air quality. full report …

Short CV

Jia Chen graduated from Universität Karlsruhe in 2006 with a Dipl.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. She obtained her doctoral degree (summa cum laude) from Technical University of Munich in 2011. From 2011 to 2015 she was a postdoctoral fellow in the Environmental Science and Engineering department at Harvard University. Since 2015 Jia Chen has been the head of the Environmental Sensing and Modeling group at Technical University of Munich. She is also an Associate at Harvard University. She is (co-)author of more than 170 publications and has filed 12 patents (https://go.tum.de/072266).

Research Interests

Jia Chen’s current research focuses on quantifying greenhouse gas emissions and understanding the metabolism of air pollutants in urban environments. Besides the development of novel, compact optical sensors, she has established the worldwide first city sensor network (MUCCnet) based on the novel method of differential column measurements. This pioneering work enables long-term assessment of urban greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions. More details please see: https://www.ei.tum.de/esm/forschung/
