On 28 May 2025, Dr. Illia Savchenko (Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, National Technical University of Ukraine) presented the first talk of the summer term in our Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability. The talk is entitled "Modified morphological analysis-based tool set for mastering underground space of metropolises".
Abstract: The problem of mastering urban underground space is globally relevant, as more and more countries encounter the problem of impossible city growth sideways and upwards, and refer to the capacities of the underground space. The underground construction provides the reduction of harmful emissions, benefits the ecological situation, improves the quality of life and safety of the dwellers, and provides protection for the critical infrastructure. The underground facilities may perform the secondary function as shelters.
In this study, a scientific problem of creating a system methodology for the complex vision of underground construction is addressed, with the consideration of uncertainties and multifactor risks. The goal of the research is to create a planning and decision support tool set for the processes of mastering the underground space of metropolises, based on the modified morphological analysis method. This required a system approach, within which the system analysis tool set was enhanced, improved, and scaled, and the models for solving practical tasks of mastering the underground space of big cities were developed. These models were applied to study a number of practical problems of Ukrainian cities related to underground construction planning. The developed methodology and the obtained results can be successfully extended to different European countries.
Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability
As part of the ongoing commitment of the TUM-IAS to foster scientific exchange and professional networks, the Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability aims to bring together scientists from research institutions in Eastern, Southeastern, and Central Europe to discuss topics related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. This seminar series is a first step to bridge the geographical and academic gaps in order to create a scientific network, and encourage joint research initiatives and build lasting collaborations for a more sustainable future
THE TUM-IAS WEDNESDAY COFFEE TALKS
Every Wednesday after lunch, it's all about a new topic - current research highlights at TUM, insights into the work of our Fellows from all over the world, sometimes even topics not usually found at TUM, such as history or theology.
The talks held online start every Wednesday during TUM lecture time at 13:00 CE(S)T. Everyone is welcome - TUM researchers of all levels, students, visiting scholars, and anyone interested!
Each final Wednesday of the month, a topic related to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals will be featured as a part of the Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability, a new initiative of the TUM-IAS in partnership with universities across Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe.
