Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Prof. Dirk Heckmann on “Beyond Blackletter Law: Creative Legal Thinking for the Digital Age”
Events, WCT |

On 14 January 2026, Prof. Dirk Heckmann(Law and Security in Digitization, TUM) will talk about “Beyond Blackletter Law: Creative Legal Thinking for the Digital Age”
Abstract: In this talk, Prof. Dr. Dirk Heckmann, Chair of Law and Security in Digitalization at the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology as well as the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology, presents his work and that of the TUM Center for Digital Public Services. Unlike conventional institutes at law faculties, the TUM CDPS operates and conducts research in a distinctly interdisciplinary and practice-oriented manner, advising political institutions, businesses, and civil society on the challenges of digital transformation. The focus lies on concrete solutions rather than on ruminating legal problems. In his work, Prof. Heckmann uses law as a positive steering resource in favor of a digitalization that serves the common good, instead of accepting law as an obstacle to digital transformation. Using examples such as digital remote examinations during the pandemic and the integration of generative AI in university assessments, Prof. Heckmann illustrates how essential innovative legal thinking has become.
