Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Prof. Dirk Heckmann “Beyond Blackletter Law: Creative Legal Thinking for the Digital Age”
Events, WCT |

On 16 July 2025, Prof. Dirk Heckmann(Law and Security in Digitization, TUM) will talk about “Beyond Blackletter Law: Creative Legal Thinking for the Digital Age”.
Abstract: In this talk, I explore how law must move beyond traditional doctrines to actively shape the digital transformation. Legal practice today increasingly demands creativity — especially where existing legal frameworks fall short. Using examples such as remote digital examinations during the pandemic and the integration of generative AI in higher education assessments, I illustrate how innovative legal thinking becomes essential. I will also introduce the TUM Center for Digital Public Services, which conducts research in this field and advises political institutions, businesses, and civil society.
