Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk: "2025 Nobel Prize in Physics: From Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena to Superconducting Quantum Computing" by Benjamin Lienhard
Events, WCT |

On 26 November 2025, Benjamin Lienhard (Walther Meißner Institute, Chair of Technical Physics, TUM) will talk about “2025 Nobel Prize in Physics: From Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena to Superconducting Quantum Computing”.
Abstract: The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis for their pioneering work demonstrating macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in superconducting electrical circuits. Their groundbreaking experiments in the 1980s demonstrated that quantum behaviors – previously observed only at microscopic scales, such as those of atoms or electrons – could extend to large-scale electrical circuits composed of billions of particles acting collectively as a single quantum system. By effectively creating artificial atoms with quantized energy levels, their discoveries laid the theoretical and experimental foundation for modern superconducting qubits, the fundamental building blocks of today’s quantum computers. The laureates’ work transformed quantum physics from a theoretical framework into an engineering toolbox capable of powering the quantum technology revolution currently reshaping computation and information science.

THE TUM-IAS WEDNESDAY COFFEE TALKS
Every Wednesday after lunch, it's all about a new topic - current research highlights at TUM, insights into the work of our Fellows from all over the world, sometimes even topics not usually found at TUM, such as history or theology.
The talks held online start every Wednesday during TUM lecture time at 13:00 CE(S)T. Everyone is welcome - TUM researchers of all levels, students, visiting scholars, and anyone interested!
