Scientists Meet Scientists –TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Prof. Niklas Boers: “Critical Transitions in Earth System Dynamics"
Events, WCT |

On May 25, 2022, Prof. Niklas Boers (Earth System Modeling, TUM) will talk about “Critical Transitions in Earth System Dynamics."
Abstract:
Some components of the Earth System have been proposed to react abruptly to gradual changes in forcing, e.g. rapidly switiching between different stable states. Examples include the polar ice sheets, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), tropical monsoon systems, and the Amazon rainforest. Niklas Boers will first introduce the theory underlying such abrupt state transitions and how to anticipate them based on results from statistical mechanics. He will then show some recent results obtained by applying this theory to observational data of the Greenland Ice Sheet, the AMOC, and the Amazon rainforest.
