Events, WCT |

On May 4, 2022, Dr. Stanislau Paulau (Leibniz Institute of European History, Mainz) will talk at our TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk about "Russia’s War on Ukraine: The Religious Dimension".
Abstract:
On 24 February 2022, Russia began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This aggression marked not only a dramatic escalation of the eight-year-old conflict, but also a historic turning point for European security order. Whereas this war has been primarily analyzed in terms of geo-politics, it has also a prominent religious dimension. Eastern Orthodox Christianity builds a crucial fundament for self-understanding of both Russian and Ukrainian states and plays a crucial role in the contested narratives of Russian-Ukrainian relations. The talk is going to give an overview of the complex entanglements between Orthodox Christianity and politics in the contexts of the Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and to analyze, whether the Russian Orthodox Church has provided theological and ideological justification for this war.
Dr Stanislau Paulau is a scholar of religion and a specialist in the field of global history of Christianity. Born in Belarus, he pursued an international academic career that took him from Minsk to Berlin, Göttingen, Geneva, Addis Abeba, and finally to Mainz, where he currently works at the Leibniz Institute of European History as a member of the academic staff.
