TUM-IAS hereby invites applications for Fellowships in various categories of its Fellowship program. We are pleased to announce that we have been able to add two new attractive programs to our portfolio thanks to funding from the Dieter Schwarz Foundation!

  • Dieter Schwarz Fellowship for renowned international scientists from outside TUM who intend to explore innovative, high-risk topics in the key areas researched at the TUM Campus Heilbronn (more information)
  • Dieter Schwarz Courageous Research Grant for outstanding international scientists from outside TUM who intend to use groundbreaking technology to propose a radical solution to a major challenge in the area of “Digitization and Sustainability” (more information)

Further information on the conditions and the selection process is available here.

Regional Hans Fischer (Senior) Fellowship (Eastern Europe / Latin America): To promote regional diversity, the TUM-IAS will award one of the Hans Fischer or Hans Fischer Senior Fellowships to a candidate from a home institution in Eastern Europe* (list of eligible Eastern European countries at the end of this announcement) or Latin America (all American Countries with the exception of Canada and the US). Candidates for this Fellowship will undergo a separate evaluation, taking into account local evaluation factors. The Fellow will then receive the regular Hans Fischer (Senior) Fellowship benefits. For the Regional Fellowship, the tandem application rule (see below) does not apply.

Siemens funded Hans Fischer (Senior) Fellowship: TUM-IAS invites nominations for Hans Fischer (Senior) Fellowships that focus on the research fields of

  • Web3 and Industrial Token Economy: Decentralized architecture guidelines, implementation strategies and incentive mechanisms for industrial metaverse use cases
  • Autonomous Systems for Flexible Manufacturing and Logistics
  • Autonomous Systems for Inspection and Maintenance

Up to three Fellowships funded by the Siemens AG can be awarded in the course of this call.

TUM GNI funded Hans Fischer (Senior) Fellowship: TUM-IAS invites nominations for Hans Fischer (Senior) Fellowships that focus on the research field of Artificial Intelligence for the Built Environment. One Fellowship funded by the TUM Georg Nemetschek Institute on Artificial Intelligence for the Built World (TUM GNI) can be awarded in the course of this call. In your statement of purpose, please comment on how your proposal fits to the thematical focus of the TUM Georg Nemetschek Institute.

We would also like to draw your attention to the tandem nomination rule for Hans Fischer and Hans Fischer Senior Fellowships (including the Siemens and TUM GNI Fellowships, not including the Regional Fellowship): As in the previous years, each TUM professor (host) is required to suggest two candidates, at least one of which must be a female researcher. Both nominations will be evaluated individually according to our usual multi-stage evaluation procedure (please see the TUM-IAS Nomination Guidelines for further details). Tandem nominations can be for the same or for several Fellowship categories (options: Hans Fischer (Senior) Fellowship candidate plus Hans Fischer (Senior) Fellowship candidate, Hans Fischer (Senior) Fellowship candidate plus Dieter Schwarz Fellowship candidate or Hans Fischer (Senior) Fellowship candidate plus Rudolf Diesel Industry Fellowship candidate). From the proposed tandem, both nominees may be successful, or one, or none. Please note that the tandem nomination rule also applies to the Dieter Schwarz Fellowship.

Proposals are to be submitted online.

Closing date for the Albrecht Struppler Fellowship, Dieter Schwarz Fellowship, Hans Fischer (Senior) Fellowship, Philosopher in Residence Fellowship and the Rudolf Diesel Industry Fellowship is Thursday, February 15, 2024 (12 p.m./noon CET).

Closing date for the Dieter Schwarz Courageous Research Grant is Thursday, March 14, 2024 (12 p.m./noon CET).

To scientists and TUM professors considering a future collaboration, we would also like to point out the TUM Global Visiting Professor Program for short-term visits of up to three months. During this initial shorter visit, prospective collaborators can explore the possibility of a future, more long-term collaboration in the framework of a Dieter Schwarz, Hans Fischer (Senior), Philosopher in Residence or Rudolf Diesel Industry Fellowship. The call for proposals is made separately via the TUM Global & Alumni Office; applications are currently accepted (more information).

TUM-IAS explicitly encourages nominations of and applications from women as well as from all others who would bring additional diversity dimensions to the university’s research and teaching strategies.
