Professor Ernst Rank and the TUM-IAS team invite the scientists of TUM and their guests for coffee each Wednesday. Just come over to the TUM-IAS after lunch between 1:00–2:00 pm and have a coffee with us, meet other scientists and listen to a short talk (10-15 mins) on a recent major TUM publication or issue – aimed specifically at a non-expert audience.
On December 4, Prof. Dr. Thomas Brück (Werner Siemens-Chair for Synthetic Biotechnology) will talk about “Towards a climate effective bioeconomy – Biotechnology centred processes for the conversion of CO2 and chemically complex biomass to sustainable chemical and material entities”. Biotechnological processes enabling fixation, valorisation and terminal removal of atmospheric/ industrial CO2 can contribute to mitigate global climate change. Synthetic biotechnology combining technological aspects of chemical biology, systems- and synthetic biology with targeted bioprocess engineering offers a consolidated approach to design new, mass- and energy efficient routes for the generation of sustainable chemical entities. The first part of the talk will convey advances in the development of oleogenious photoautotrophic and heterotrophic microbial platforms for conversion of CO2 in biofuels, high value lubricants and sustainable carbon fibers. The implications of the presented technologies with regard to curbing climate change will be discussed in the context of developing a cyclic bioeconomy.
