Professor Ernst Rank and the TUM-IAS team invite the scientists of TUM and their guests for coffee each Wednesday. Just come over to the TUM-IAS after lunch between 1:00–2:00 pm and have a coffee with us, meet other scientists and listen to a short talk (10-15 mins) on a recent major TUM publication or issue – aimed specifically at a non-expert audience.
On January 8th, Prof. Dr. Susanne Kossatz (TUM Department of Nuclear Medicine) will talk about “DNA repair response as cancer biomarker – opportunities for diagnosis and treatment” In the age of personalized medicine, cancer treatments are often designed to precisely hit specific biomarkers, efficiently interrupting cancer metabolism and proliferation. However, patient response is often very heterogeneous and better methods are needed to identify the patients that will most likely benefit from certain treatments. The nuclear DNA repair enzyme is one such target that has become a focal point of interest, because PARP1 inhibitors can elicit strong tumor response in certain subgroups of patients. Furthermore, PARP1 is overexpressed in virtually all types of cancer, making it a highly interesting target. Converting PARP inhibitors into fluorescent and radiolabeled molecular imaging probes offers powerful possibilities for novel diagnostic and therapeutic clinical applications, including cancer screening, prognostic imaging, treatment monitoring and targeted delivery of therapeutic radioisotopes, which will be discussed during this talk.
