Prof. Ernst Rank and the TUM-IAS team invite the scientists of TUM and their guests for coffee each Wednesday! Just come over to the TUM-IAS after lunch between 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. and have a coffee with us, meet other scientists and listen from time to time to a short talk (10-15 mins) on a recent major TUM publication or issue – aimed specifically at a non-expert audience.
On May 29, Dr. Thierry Lasserre (Institut de recherche sur les lois fondamentales de l’Univers, France) will talk about “Neutrino Mass Measurement: First data of the KATRIN experiment”. What is the mass of neutrinos? To answer this fundamental question, the KATRIN experiment was designed and built by an international collaboration at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. KATRIN, a German acronym for Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment, will measure the mass of the electron antineutrino with sub-eV precision. Neutrinos probably are the most fascinating species of elementary particles. The “ghost particle of the Universe” is a key to open issues in science on many scales, linking the microcosm of elementary particles to the largest structures in the Universe. The first electron spectra from tritium decay have been analyzed with an analysis chain developed at IRFU. Everything conforms to the required specifications and the first long data taking campaign for physics can start (see former TUM-IAS Focus Group).
