Prof. Ernst Rank and the TUM-IAS team invite the scientists of TUM and their guests for coffee each Wednesday! Just come over to the TUM-IAS after lunch between 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. and have a coffee with us, meet other scientists and listen from time to time to a short talk (10-15 mins) on a recent major TUM publication or issue – aimed specifically at a non-expert audience.
Dr. Markus Hölzel (FRM II) will talk about “Crystal Structures of Fluorine revisited by Neutron Diffraction”. IFluorine might be the last stable chemical element for which the crystal structure is still under debate. The latest studies by X-Ray diffraction on solid fluorine (α and β modifications) were carried out about 50 years ago. In particular, the low temperature α modification has been investigated only once (1968) – but two different space groups were proposed. Scientists from Marburg, TU Munich and Aalto (Finland) have now clarified the actual structures of fluorine using neutron diffraction at the Research Neutron Source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (TUM press release). These new results will be presented as well as a review on early work on fluorine.
