Prof. Ernst Rank and the TUM-IAS team invite the scientists of TUM and their guests for coffee each Wednesday! Just come over to the TUM-IAS after lunch between 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. and have a coffee with us, meet other scientists and listen from time to time to a short talk (10-15 mins) on a recent major TUM publication or issue – aimed specifically at a non-expert audience.
On February 06, 2019, Dr. Laura Sánchez (German Geodetic Research Institute and Chair Geodetic Geodynamics) will talk about GPS data serving as the basis for a geodetic model of the Alps which are on the go: The mountain range drifts northwards an average of one-half millimeter every year and rises 1.8 millimeters. However, there are strong regional variances. In order to follow these movements, a team from the TUM German Geodetic Research Institute has evaluated measurements made by more than 300 GPS antennas over a period of twelve years. Now for the first time a computer model illustrates the dynamics of the entire Alpine region (TUM press release).
Relevant Publication:
Sánchez, Laura; Völksen, Christof; Sokolov, Alexandr; Arenz, Herbert; Seitz, Florian (2018): “Present-day surface deformation of the Alpine Region inferred from geodetic techniques”; The study has been published in the journal Earth System Science Data. The academic journal specializes on the publication of data sets. Link: doi.org/10.5194/essd-2018-19 (preprint version)
We look forward to seeing you there!
