Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Prof. Julian Grünewald: “Engineering CRISPR medicines”
Events, WCT |
On July 19, 2023, Rudolf Mößbauer Tenure Track Professor Julian Grünewald (Gene Editing, TUM / TUM Center for Organoid Systems (COS) / Klinikum rechts der Isar of TUM, Medicine I: Cardiology) will talk about “Engineering CRISPR medicines.”
Abstract: The first CRISPR treatment is expected to be approved in 2023. This will herald a new era of medicine. While CRISPR technologies are still mostly perceived as “gene scissors” and public perception is focused on correcting pathogenic mutations, gene editing approaches have become far more complex and diverse. New CRISPR 2.0 editors allow precise editing without needing DNA double-strand breaks or donor templates. New editing targets and approaches enable gene and cell therapies beyond restoring the “reference sequence”. This talk will be about current developments in the field and the engineering of new CRISPR architectures.
