Abstract:
Understanding how the brain controls behavior is arguably one of humanity's highest goals. Philosophers, physicians, and natural scientists share this goal, not only because it promises a better understanding of humans, but also because it has direct implications for human health, society, and economy. While behavioral ecology and human psychophysics have been describing and characterizing behavior for centuries, the analysis of the underlying neural processes has only recently emerged through the use of modern techniques and research on genetically modifiable model systems.
Specifically, Ilona Grunwald Kadow’s work focuses on the neural and synaptic mechanisms that allow the body and brain to communicate. In particular, she would like to understand how physiological and behavioral states alter sensory perception. Conceptually and technically, her current and future research program relies mainly on genetically modifiable model organisms such as fruit flies and mice, and uses novel and innovative technologies such as in vivo whole-brain imaging, optogenetic control of behavior, EM-connectomics and physiological measurements in living and behaving animals.
In this short lecture, Ilona Grunwald Kadow will present recent examples of her work.
