Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Prof. em Hans Förstl on “Dr. Kant – Immanuel Kant and Medicine”
Events, WCT |
On 23 October 2024, there will be a talk by Prof. em. Hans Förstl (Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, TUM) on „Dr. Kant – Immanuel Kant and Medicine”.
Abstract:
Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) had a life-long interest in medicine. He beefed-up his profitable lectures on geography and anthropology with remarkable medical detail and advice. He would not consider medicine as a proper science, however, and claimed superior competence in several adjacent areas (e.g. genetics, forensic medicine, psychotherapy), while his own clinical skills as a diagnostician and therapist must remain doubtful to say the least. Kant was his own best physician and patient, strictly following his idiopathic approach towards the classical modifiable risk factors. That allowed him to become an old and frail person, who racked his brain[s] over the critical neuro=philosophical nexus until his very end. One could say a lot about Kant and medicine, but not in 15 minutes. Therefore, my presentation will focus on one of his “patients”, on Kant’s skull and its contents.
