Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Kim Melanie Kraus on “Microbeam Radiation Therapy – From Source to Patient”
Events, WCT |
On 5 February 2025, Dr. med. Kim Melanie Kraus (Radiation Oncology, TUM University Hospital / Albrecht Struppler Clinician Scientist Fellow) will talk about “Microbeam Radiation Therapy – From Source to Patient.”
Abstract: Microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) is a novel cancer treatment technique based on spatially fractionated photon radiation. X-ray beams are spaced several hundreds of micrometres apart with each beam being several ten micrometres wide. This unique beam profile with alternating high and low dose beamlets has proven superior normal tissue sparing in preclinical experiments while the effect on the tumour target remained comparable to conventional broad beam irradiation. The observation of an increase in the therapeutic window between tumour control and toxicity in organs at risk, promises a strong improvement in the treatment of tumours in radiation sensitive areas. However, up to now, this technique has not been applied clinically as there are still major challenges on the way towards clinical application. One major hurdle is the beam source as currently only large synchrotrons with very limited availability worldwide can produce a beam suitable for MRT.
Our team is currently developing a compact MRT source at the TUM campus in Garching aiming to cover the entire workflow from technical design towards first clinical application.
In this talk, aspects of the development of a compact MRT source with regard to the design of the source target as part of an interdisciplinary project of our team from the TUM School of Medicine and Health and the Laboratory for Product Development and Lightweight design (LPL) at the TUM School of Engineering and Design are highlighted. Additional focus will be put on clinical aspects such as dose delivery and dose calculation and the identification of suitable treatment scenarios for future clinical application.

THE TUM-IAS WEDNESDAY COFFEE TALKS
Every Wednesday after lunch, it's all about a new topic - current research highlights at TUM, insights into the work of our Fellows from all over the world, sometimes even topics not usually found at TUM, such as history or theology.
The talks held online start every Wednesday during TUM lecture time at 13:00 CE(S)T. Everyone is welcome - TUM researchers of all levels, students, visiting scholars, and anyone interested!
Each final Wednesday of the month, a topic related to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals will be featured as a part of the Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability, a new initiative of the TUM-IAS in partnership with universities across Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe.
