Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Dr. Rico Gutschmidt on “Boundary Situations in Health Care”
Events, WCT |
On 17 July 2024, Dr. Rico Gutschmidt (Philosopher in Residence at the Institute for Advanced Study) will talk about "Boundary Situations in Health Care – A Qualitative Study at the TUM Klinikum rechts der Isar."
Abstract:
Patients who have to endure severe physical or emotional suffering or are confronted with their own death due to an terminal illness can experience their situation as a boundary situation in the sense of Karl Jaspers. Using a qualitative phenomenological interview approach, Rico Gutschmidt investigated how patients experience boundary situations and how caregivers in medicine, psychotherapy, nursing and social work perceive these boundary situations: How does it feel for people to experience a boundary situation and how does this experience change their view of themselves and the world?
Building on this, Rico Gutschmidt investigated what the insights into the experience of boundary situations imply for the treatment of such patients. How can caregivers be made more sensitive to dealing with people in boundary situations? The insights obtained are to be made available to those responsible in the healthcare sector and thus contribute to better support for patients in boundary situations.
