Watch the talk of the TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Prof. Berna Özkale Edelmann: "Soft microrobots for thermomechanical investigations into cell behavior"

On 24 January 2024Prof. Berna Özkale Edelmann (Microrobotic Bioengineering Lab, TUM) talked about "Soft microrobots for thermomechanical investigations into cell behavior.”

Abstract: Regenerative medicine has made a significant impact on human health, following developments in tissue engineering and biomaterials. While most of the engineered material systems provide the necessary biomolecular cues for cell culture, they cannot completely recreate the mechanically active conditions of the native microenvironment. My research focuses on engineering active biomaterials that can recreate the dynamic microenvironment synthetically in three-dimensional conditions. In my lab, we engineer small-scale, soft devices to develop microfluidic in vitro cell culture platforms. In this talk, I will introduce the recently developed, thermally activated cell-signal imaging (TACSI) microrobot, which we developed at MRBL. I will discuss how we use TACSI microrobots to stimulate single mammalian cells in a mobile manner, and how the TACSI platform can be used for further research.

THE TUM-IAS WEDNESDAY COFFEE TALKS

Every Wednesday after lunch, it's all about a new topic - current research highlights at TUM, insights into the work of our Fellows from all over the world, sometimes even topics not usually found at TUM, such as history or theology.

The talks held online start every Wednesday during TUM lecture time at 1:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome - TUM researchers of all levels, students, visiting scholars, and anyone interested!

Each final Wednesday of the month, a topic related to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals will be featured as a part of the Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability, a new initiative of the TUM-IAS in partnership with universities across Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe.
