Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Prof. Michael M. Andregg (University of St. Thomas & Minnesota): “The Developing Global Crisis and Global Security for the Third Millennium of the Common Era”

Events, WCT |

On December 6, 2023, Prof. Michael M. Andregg (University of St. Thomas / University of Minnesota) will talk about “The Developing Global Crisis and Global Security for the Third Millennium of the Common Era.

Abstract: Human civilization(s) face two main existential threats this century. The first is a quick death from general thermonuclear war or release of other Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) like exotic, genetically engineered biological weapons. The second is a slow death from incremental destruction of the living system that supports all civilizations, wise or unwise, by mechanisms like deforestation, desertification, climate change, and general loss of biodiversity.

The “Developing Global Crisis” is a phrase and paradigm for analyzing forces behind both of those existential threats that are especially powerful, but also difficult to assess or analyze. They are:  Population Pressure, Corruption of Governance, Authoritarian Law, and Militant Religions.  Of course, there are thousands of variables that affect actual outcomes for civilizations, whatever those are. But these four can stimulate thoughts about potential solutions, without which merely describing global problems is just depressing and disabling.

THE TUM-IAS WEDNESDAY COFFEE TALKS

Every Wednesday after lunch, it's all about a new topic - current research highlights at TUM, insights into the work of our Fellows from all over the world, sometimes even topics not usually found at TUM, such as history or theology.

The talks held online start every Wednesday during TUM lecture time at 1:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome - TUM researchers of all levels, students, visiting scholars, and anyone interested!

Each final Wednesday of the month, a topic related to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals will be featured as a part of the Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability, a new initiative of the TUM-IAS in partnership with universities across Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe.
