Workshop „Advocates and Allies: Male Allies for Gender Equality“ by Hans Fischer Senior Fellow Gregory D. Erhardt

Events |

Content

While we are all aware that women continue to be underrepresented in the sciences, the path toward addressing this issue differs across demographic groups. Traditionally, much of the advocacy is done by women. Since men dominate faculty demographics on campus, however, this group needs to be involved in any change in social norms. While many men do care about and understand gender diversity issues, they may not possess the understanding, vocabulary, or skills to turn their good intentions into actions.

This workshop takes a new approach, focusing on how men can be better advocates and allies of women in the workplace. The course will be taught by men, creating a depolarizing environment for a freer exchange of ideas. We will cover topics including implicit bias, work culture, effective communication, and dealing with pushback. For each topic, we will discuss best practices, allow for discussion of relevant examples, and provide guidance for future activities.

We will meet in person to better facilitate these conversations.

Goals

  • You will meet and engage with other men to understand the barriers women face in academia.
  • You will learn techniques and best practices for being an ally for women.
  • You will build a community of male advocates and allies to promote gender equality.

Methods

Input from the course instructor, practice of discussed skills and techniques, room for your specific questions and cases
