Scientists Meet Scientists – Wednesday Coffee Talk by Prof. Liqiu Meng (Cartography) on multidisciplinary research findings about seeing and their impacts on cartographic design

Events, WCT |

Prof. Ernst Rank and the TUM-IAS team invite the scientists of TUM and their guests for coffee each Wednesday! Just come over to the TUM-IAS after lunch between 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. and have a coffee with us, meet other scientists and listen from time to time to a short talk (10-15 mins) on a recent major TUM publication or issue – aimed specifically at a non-expert audience.

On January 18, 2017, Prof. Liqiu Meng (Cartography) will talk about "how much seeing is believing?”

Seeing with eyes as the window of our soul is the first step of visual communication of information. Although seeing proves more efficient and precise than hearing, it does not always lead to believing. Often our seeing is distorted and distracted by believing and many other factors. Since decades researchers worldwide have been struggling hard to understand how eye and mind interact and trick each other.

The speaker will revisit the human visual system by sharing with you the multidisciplinary research findings on seeing and their impacts on cartographic design. Case studies of geovisualization or map-based services are demonstrated with the purpose of maximizing the unbiased visual communication of geospatial information and encouraging further questions from the audience.

We look forward to seeing you there!
