Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Prof. Patrick Dewilde on "Chaos, Emergence and the Necessity of Ethics“

Events, WCT |

On 24 April 2024, Prof. Patrick Dewilde (founding director of TUM-IAS) will talk about “Chaos, Emergence and the Necessity of Ethics”.

Abstract:
Traditional world evolution models are deterministic (and thought to be predictive), but that is not how nature behaves mostly. Even though the world and nature are exceedingly complex, we know meanwhile that it is possible to get some qualitative and even quantitative insights in complex behavior. "Chaos" and "emergence" play a central role in such modeling efforts. The talk attempts to make these notions and their impact more precise, by illustrating them with examples and by making the mechanisms involved plausible. Intelligence in its various forms will be seen to play a major role in generating emergence through control by proxies, but needs, in turn, to be disciplined by a further meta-layer of intelligent quality control, which we call "ethics", again a perhaps controversial notion to be elucidated.

Patrick Dewilde is emeritus professor of Electrical Engineering from TU Delft and emeritus director of TUM-IAS. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Knight of the Dutch Lion and a honorary professor of both the TUM and Wroclaw University of Technology. His research has focused on System Theory and Design Technology (including related Ethics.).

THE TUM-IAS WEDNESDAY COFFEE TALKS

Every Wednesday after lunch, it's all about a new topic - current research highlights at TUM, insights into the work of our Fellows from all over the world, sometimes even topics not usually found at TUM, such as history or theology.

The talks held online start every Wednesday during TUM lecture time at 13:00 CE(S)T. Everyone is welcome - TUM researchers of all levels, students, visiting scholars, and anyone interested!

Each final Wednesday of the month, a topic related to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals will be featured as a part of the Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability, a new initiative of the TUM-IAS in partnership with universities across Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe.
