Research Group of TUM-IAS Host Matthias Tschöp discovers a brain sugar switch

News |

A team of researchers lead by TUM-IAS host Prof. Matthias Tschöp recently published a manuscript with the title “Astrocytic insulin signaling couples brain glucose uptake with nutrient availability” in the high-impact journal Cell (IF 28.710). The study presented in the manuscript discovered that our brain actively takes sugar from the blood. Prior to this, researchers around the world had assumed that this was a purely passive process. The work was also supported by TUM-IAS Hans Fischer Senior Fellow Prof. Tamas Horvath from Yale University and by TUM-IAS PhD candidate Tim Gruber, who is jointly supervised by Prof. Tschöp and Prof. Horvath.
