On November 12, 2022 at 21:45 (CET), arte will show the documentary “Die fliegenden Flüsse des Amazonas” (English title: Rivers above the canopy) in its German program. Dr. Anastassia Makarieva, Anna Boyksen Fellow of the IAS and member of the International Expert Group on Earth System Preservation (IESP), was one of the scientific contributors, and the film premiered at the TUM-IAS General Assembly in May 2022.

Synopsis: Often considered as the "beating heart of the Earth", the trees in the Amazon absorb water from the ground and pump out billions of tons of water vapor a day into vast "flying rivers" essential to the environmental balance. But what if this natural phenomenon were to disappear? What would be the ecological consequences on our planet? From the Amazon rainforest to some of the world’s top laboratories and research centers, and thanks to 3D animation sequences, this scientific investigation deciphers the mechanisms of this extraordinary phenomenon. A race against time to discover the Amazon rainforest from a climate perspective, questioning our planet’s biological equilibrium and human responsibility.
