Description and Goals
The “Sense of Agency in Real-World Applications” workshop, organized by Hans Fischer Senior Fellow Prof. Agnieszka Wykowska (Italian Institute of Technology) and her host Prof. Gordon Cheng, will focus on the Sense of Agency (SoA), namely the feeling of being in control over our own actions and their consequences, in the context of real-world applications. SoA has traditionally been measured through non-continuous measures, related to discrete events in a task (e.g., auditory or visual stimuli presented upon key presses). Therefore, the typical measures such as intentional binding or sensory attenuation both treat agency as a discrete event in response to a single sensory stimulus. However, to test SoA in real-world scenarios, as required in applications such as autonomous driving, teleoperation, or prosthetics, these event-based methods are restrictive and disrupt task execution. This workshop addresses the need for new measures of SoA in order to move from lab-based settings onto real-world scenarios. We will discuss different aspects of the experience of SoA, current methodologies and their limitations, as lastly, we will brainstorm about continuous measurement frameworks, including multimodal metrics, that could be used to monitor the SoA throughout task execution in complex settings.
The event agenda is distributed across two days with several keynote speakers, brainstorming sessions for scientific exchange, and two flash-talk sessions that give early career researchers (PhD candidates) the opportunity to share their work.
This Workshop is open to Ph.D. students at any stage of their doctoral studies, whose research intersects with the fields of Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience, Psychiatry, Human-Robot Interaction, AI, Robotics and Neuroengineering. You are encouraged to apply for a flash talk (10 minutes) upon registration.
Participation is free of charge and includes coffee breaks and lunch on both days. But please note that travel and accommodation are not covered.
