Fabienne Gautier heads the Open Science and European Research Area Policy Unit in the European Commission (DG Research and Innovation) since 2014.

Prior to that, she served as the Acting Head of Unit since September 2012 and the Deputy Head of Unit since April 2011. The Open Science and ERA Policy Unit designs, implements, and monitors specific policy actions to establish a European research area with an open scientific culture in partnership with the member states and other stakeholders.

From 1995 to 2011, Gautier built up her expertise in European research and education management when she served as policy and legal officer for several EU framework programmes. These include the ERA-NET and ERA-NET Plus programmes, the Legal Unit of the Directorate General for Research, or the Administration and Finance Unit. Most prominently, she directed the implementation of Article 185 of the Treaty for the Seventh Framework Programme.

Ms. Gautier holds a Master’s degree in French Law, a certificate in European Law from the European Institute in Saarbrücken (Germany), and an Advanced Master in Law of Information and Communication Technologies from the University of Namur (Belgium).
