Andrzej Buras was born in Warschau. In 1971 he received his M.S. in Theoretical Physics at Warsaw University. He emigrated to Denmark in 1971, where he received his Ph.D. degree in High Energy Theoretical Physics from the Niels-Bohr-Institute. From 1972 to 1975 Buras worked as Postdoctoral Fellow at the Niels Bohr Institute. After years of scientific travel to the Theory Group at CERN, the Fermilab Theory Group and the SLAC Theory Group, he joined the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics in Munich in 1982. In 1988 he received an appointment to the Technische Universität München. From 1988 to 2012 he was a Full Professor in the Physics Department at TUM. Furthermore, from 1990 to 1992 and from 2002 to 2004 he was head of the Theory Institute in the Physics Department of TUM and from 2006 to 2012 a project leader of one of the seven research areas in the Cluster of Excellence: Origin and Structure of the Universe. In 2012 Buras became TUM Emeritus of Excellence. Presently he is leading the focus group Fundamental Physics at TUM-IAS.

Andrzej Buras is one of the most cited particle theorists in Europe and the most cited theoretical flavour physicist worldwide. He has been awarded the Smoluchowski-Warburg Medal of German and Polish Societies (2007), a Carl von Linde Senior Fellowship at TUM-IAS (2008-2011), an Advanced ERC Grant (2011- 2016) and the highest Award in Theoretical Physics in Germany, the Max Planck Medal 2020. He is member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and foreign member of two Academies in Poland.

In 2020 his book on "Gauge Theory of Weak Decays" has been published by Cambridge University Press.

Research Interests

Buras is one of the leading theorists in the field of applied quantum field theory. He is currently working on tests for the standard model and for alternative proposals in particular Leptoquark models, models with vectorlike quarks, Z' models and generally in the context of the Standard Model Effective Field theory.
