Scientists Meet Scientists – Wednesday Coffee Talk by Dr. Markus Hölzel (FRM II) about "Crystal Structures of Fluorine revisited by Neutron Diffraction"
Prof. Ernst Rank and the TUM-IAS team invite the scientists of TUM and their guests for coffee each Wednesday! Just come over to the TUM-IAS after lunch between 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. and have a coffee with us, meet other scientists and listen from time to time to a short talk (10-15 mins) on a recent major TUM publication or issue – aimed specifically at a non-expert audience.
Dr. Markus Hölzel (FRM II) will talk about “Crystal Structures of Fluorine revisited by Neutron Diffraction”. In toothpaste, Teflon, LEDs and medications, it shows its sunny side, but elemental fluorine is extremely aggressive and highly toxic. Attempts to determine the crystal structure of solid fluorine using X-rays ended with explosions 50 years ago. A research team has now clarified the actual structure of the fluorine using neutrons from the Heinz Maier Leibnitz Research Neutron Source (TUM press release).

We look forward to seeing you there!
