Proteomics

Dr. Peer-Hendrik Kuhn was a Carl von Linde Junior Fellow. Together with his Host Prof. Stefan Lichtenthaler (Neuroproteomics, TUM), they formed the Focus Group Proteomics, which studies how cells communicate with other cells and with the extracellular environment. Proteins secreted by cells – the so-called secretome – have a major role in intercellular communication and are considered as a rich source for the identification of biomarkers and drug targets for diseases. The secretome of a given cell type comprises soluble, secreted proteins as well as membrane protein fragments released by proteases. The Focus Group uses and develops novel methods in proteomics and chemical biology for studying the secretome in physiological and pathophysiological conditions. One major aim is the investigation of quantitative and qualitative changes of secretomes under pathophysiological conditions such as tumors, inflammation and neurodegeneration to identify novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers and to better understand the molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases.
