Intra-Operative Therapy

The Focus Group Intra-Operative Therapy of Rudolf Diesel Industry Fellow Prof. Dr. Michael Friebe were focusing on the combination of minimal-invasive therapy techniques, including the application of intra-operative radiation therapy, with advanced diagnostic imaging devices.

An initial development goal was to use advanced MRI imaging to find and localize small pathologies and subsequently perform minimal-invasive therapy with a small radiation source and continuous intra-operative imaging for visualization and navigation. A small radiation source needs to be build, combined with intra-operative imaging technologies (e.g. US, SPECT, Fluorescence), and guided by separate navigation techniques and pre-operative imaging data (CT, MRI, PET).

To achieve that translational goal a close and intensive interdisciplinary collaboration between the clinical specialists / users (Surgical Oncology, Radiation Therapy, Gynecology, Dermatology, Urology, Minimal Invasive Surgery, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine ...) and the technical faculties (Medical Technology, Physics, Informatics, Medical Physics, ...) is needed.

There are great synergies with the existing Focus Groups Biomedical Engineering (Prof. Kucharczyk and Prof. Haase) and Molecular Imaging (Prof. Aime, Prof. Schwaiger).

The Intra-Operative Therapy group was hosted by Prof. Nassir Navab, the head of the Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures & Augmented Reality (CAMPAR).

TUM-IAS funded doctoral candidate:
Philipp Matthies, Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures & Augmented Reality
