Soil Architecture

Soil is vital for the production of food and fiber which is essential to feed an ever-growing population and also for the provision of the Earth’s primary renewable resources. Soil is built of a dynamic and hierarchically organized system of various organic and inorganic constituents and organisms, which mediates most of the biogeophysical and chemical interactions between the land, its surface and ground waters, and the atmosphere. During the biomass formation/decomposition cycle carbon dioxide (CO2), the most important climatic gas, is either released from soils or is stabilized as organic matter in soils. The biogeochemical processes that are part of this cycle are strongly coupled to the N cycle. Man is intervening in the natural C and N cycle on a global scale by soil management, especially type and intensity of land use. The elucidation of the biogeochemical processes that are part of these cycles is the focus of Prof. Ingrid Kögel-Knabner as a Carl von Linde Senior Fellow. This requires following new avenues of integration of soil physical, chemical and biological disciplines and demands the application and development of emerging characterisation and probing techniques. To put this into action an array of sophisticated experiments must be coupled with advanced analytical techniques. The specific features of the novel microprobe technologies with high sensitivity and resolution make it an unprecedented tool for the analysis of biogeochemical processes and properties of soils and thereby will boost our ability to elucidate soil structural composition at the submicron scale. Our research was focussed on the simultaneous analysis of the spatial distribution of C, N, Si and Fe in organo-mineral associations and in a second step will be applied to labeling studies to examine transport and transformation pathways: This unique combination provides one of the most promising approaches for exploring the C and N cycle of soils at a resolution not possible before.
