Short CV
Born in Weimar, Germany, Ulrich Stimming received his Diploma in Chemistry in 1974 and was awarded his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1979, both at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. After working at the Heinrich-Heine Universität Düsseldorf, 1982 Ulrich Stimming joined the IBM Watson Research Center in NY, USA, before he became a member of the faculty of Columbia University, New York, first as Assistant Professor then as Associate Professor. In 1991 he was appointed Head of the Institute of Energy Process Engineering at the Research Center Jülich, Germany, and became Full Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Bonn; he also was awarded with a Honorary Professorship at the University of Ulm. Since 1997 he is holding the Chair of Technical Physics at the Technische Universität München and is the Scientific Head of Division1 of the Bavarian Center for Applied Energy Research (ZAE Bayern). In 2001 he started the scientific journal “Fuel Cells – From Fundamentals to Systems”, VCH-Wiley, and has since been its editor-in-chief. 2004 he became Director of the Center of Nanotechnology and Nanomaterials (nanoTUM) and a permanent visiting Professor at the University of Yamanashi, Japan. In April 2009 he was appointed member of the European University Association (EUA) representing German Universities on behalf of the German Rectors Conference (HRK). Since 2010, Prof. Stimming has been the Co-Director of the Joint “Institute for Advanced Power Sources” (IAPS) of TUM and Tsinghua University (Beijing, China). Currently he is coordinating TUM•Energy, the largest interdisciplinary research program of the TU München. Prof. Stimming members various national and international academic advisory committees and serves in evaluation panels of the European Research Council (ERC).

Research Interests
Ulrich Stimmings research interests are mainly focused on the topics energy conversion and storage and the solid-liquid interface physics covering fundamental research on a molecular basis. This involves detailed basic research on single nanoparticles using different microscopy and electrochemical techniques to achieve information about their chemical, catalytic, electrocatalytic or physical properties.One focus is the application of principles of solid state physics to interfacial problems.The aimof the applied fuel cell research is the development of "the complete pathway" starting from the synthesis and preparation of new catalysts and support materials to their application in real fuel cell systems. During the last few years Ulrich Stimming also started to investigate aspects of catalytic reactions in biological systems.
