Menno Poot studied Applied Physics at TU Delft in the Netherlands and obtained his PhD at the university’s Kavli Institute of Nanoscience. Before joining TUM, he was a Rubicon Fellow at the department of Electrical Engineering at Yale University (U.S.A.). In May 2017 Professor Poot was awarded a Rudolf Mößbauer Tenure Track Professorship at the Physics Department of TUM, where he is leading a research group which focuses on quantum technologies.

Research Interests
The research interests of Rudolf Mößbauer Tenure Track Professor Menno Poot include studying the dynamics of nanomechanical resonators at extremely low temperatures, just a few thousandths of a degree above absolute zero. At such temperatures, resonators are in their quantum ground state and their behavior can be probed using extremely sensitive optomechnical techniques. Another area of research concerns quantum optics. Here, photonic chips are made with functionality to generate, manipulate, and detect single photons. The flexible platform which Professor Poot developed uses opto-electromechanical devices to control the path which photons take, as well as superconducting single-photon detectors.
