Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by PD Dr. Rico Gutschmidt “Against the system. Marcuse’s Heidegger-Marxism”
Events, WCT |

On 2 July 2025, PD Dr. Rico Gutschmidt (Alumnus Philosopher in Residence) will talk about “Against the system. Marcuse’s Heidegger-Marxism”.
Abstract: The political dimension of Heidegger’s philosophy is highly controversial. Given his involvement in the Third Reich, it is perhaps surprising that his philosophy was very influential for left-wing philosophers such as Sartre, Marcuse, and Agamben. One can even speak of a Heidegger-Marxism. Marcuse was a student of Heidegger and his best-known work, The One-Dimensional Man (1964), which had a strong influence on the student movement, was strongly influenced by Heidegger.
In Being and Time (1927), Heidegger describes how people adapt to their respective conditions. Based on this, Marcuse criticizes capitalist conditions. Against the totalitarian temptation of communism, however, one can argue with Hannah Arendt using Heidegger as a starting point that there is no neutral perspective from which one could oversee society and organize it in a definitively just way. Marcuse’s Heidegger-Marxism, therefore, leads to the question of how far criticism of a system to which one belongs can go.
