Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk by Marlene Stechl on “Turning Hop Waste into Sustainable Building Materials: HopfON”
Events, WCT |
On 6 November 2024, Marlene Stechl (Architecture and Design, TUM / HopfOn) will talk about “Turning Hop Waste into Sustainable Building Materials: HopfON.”
Abstract:
In the face of growing environmental challenges, the building industry must evolve towards more sustainable practices. At HopfON, we have developed a circular economy solution by transforming hop waste, a byproduct from the world's largest contiguous hop-growing region Hallertau, into high-performance, sustainable acoustic panels. This talk will present our journey of developing a zero-waste process that leverages the natural properties of hop fibers without using external binders, creating a product that is not only fully recyclable but also competitive with conventional acoustic materials. We will explore our technological innovations, our product development, and the scaling potential through pilot projects such as our installation in Mannheim, showcasing how biobased materials can provide effective, eco-friendly alternatives for modern architecture.

THE TUM-IAS WEDNESDAY COFFEE TALKS
Every Wednesday after lunch, it's all about a new topic - current research highlights at TUM, insights into the work of our Fellows from all over the world, sometimes even topics not usually found at TUM, such as history or theology.
The talks held online start every Wednesday during TUM lecture time at 13:00 CE(S)T. Everyone is welcome - TUM researchers of all levels, students, visiting scholars, and anyone interested!
Each final Wednesday of the month, a topic related to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals will be featured as a part of the Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability, a new initiative of the TUM-IAS in partnership with universities across Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe.
