Short CV
Axel Haase was born and educated in Hof (State of Bavaria) in 1952. He studied physics at the Universities of Erlangen and Giessen and received his diploma in 1977. He was awarded Dr.rer.nat. at the University of Giessen in 1980. From 1978 until 1989 he was working as a scientist at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen. In 1982 he spend one year as a postdoc at the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Oxford. Axel Haase qualified as professor (Habilitation) for biophysical chemistry at the University of Frankfurt. Since 1989 he holds a Chair of Experimental Physics (Biophysics) at the University of Wuerzburg. He is past President of the European Society of Magnetic Resonance in Biology and Medicine (ESMRMB) and was President of the University of Wuerzburg from 2003 until September 2009. In October 2009 he was delegated to TUM and became Carl von Linde Senior Fellow at TUM-IAS. Axel Haase is the director of the Institute of Medical Engineering (Zentralinstitut für Medizintechnik) at TUM.
Selected Awards
- 2001, Fellow of the “Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften”, Munich
- 1991, Gold Medal Award of the “International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM)”, San Francisco, USA Since
- 1990, Annual Award of the “European Workshop on Magnetic Resonance in Medicine”
- 1989, European Magnetic Resonance Tomography Award
- 1987, Heisenberg Fellow of the DFG
- 1982, Liebig Fellow of the “Fonds der Chemischen Industrie”, Germany
Research Interests
His research interests focus on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). He has developed many MRI techniques and was co-inventor of FLASH MRI, a patent for fast MRI granted to the Max Planck Society. He has applied many innovative MRI and MR spectroscopy methods to biomedicine, including cardiac and neurological studies.
