Andreas Kronfeld

Short CV

Andreas Kronfeld is a theoretical physicist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, USA. He received his PhD in 1985 from Cornell University, studying under G. Peter Lepage. From 1985–1988 he was a postdoctoral researcher at the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany. He has been at Fermilab since 1988, first as a postdoc and since 1989 as a staff member. He has been very active in developing the numerical technique of lattice gauge theory (a formulation of quantum field theory) and applying it to problems needed to interpret experiments in elementary particle physics. During his career, he has also been active in examining the physics opportunities of possible future particle accelerators, such as e+e– colliders (e.g., ILC) and high-intensity proton linacs (e.g., Project X).

Research Interests

To interpret many experiments in particle physics, it is necessary to carry out theoretical calculations of properties of hadrons. The modern theory explaining these particles’ behavior is quantum chromodynamics (QCD), a quantum field theory with many intriguing properties. In many cases, the only way to obtain the needed information is with numerical techniques using a formulation of quantum field theory on a spacetime lattice. Thus, this research touches both high-performance computing, to generate numerical data for QCD, and theoretical work, to turn the data into physical results. My work in this area has been devoted to improving our knowledge of the standard model of particle physics, to enable experiments to search for phenomena lying beyond the standard model.
