Marc Janoschek

Short CV

Marc Janoschek is currently the head of the Laboratory of Scientific Developments and Novel Materials (LDM) at Paul Scherrer Institut. LDM provides technical and scientific support for state-of-the-art experiments carried out using particle beams produced by the SINQ and UCN neutron sources as well as the SMS muon sources at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI). Marc received a PhD degree in physics from Technische Universität München in 2008. During this time, he also held joint appointments at three European neutron sources (ILL, PSI, FRM II), where he developed a neutron polarimeter (“MuPAD”) for the unambiguous determination of complex magnetic structures. He was a Feodor Lynen fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of California, San Diego, where he acquired further expertise in the synthesis of high-quality single-crystals. Subsequently, Marc joined Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), where from 2011 until 2018 he was the capability leader for neutron scattering in the Condensed Matter & Magnetic Science group. Marc’s research explores the emergent properties of strongly correlated quantum materials via x-ray and neutron scattering, with an emphasis on quantum criticality, unconventional superconductivity and novel types of magnetism such as skyrmions. For his research he has been received several awards such as the Wolfram-Prandl price and the LANL Fellows Award for Outstanding Research in Science or Engineering.
