Scientists Meet Scientists – TUM-IAS Wednesday Coffee Talk | Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability by Dr. Viktória Takács: "Stakeholder engagement in nature conservation science – need or must?"

Events, WCT |

On May 29, 2024, Dr. Viktória Takács (Zoology Department, Poznań University of Life Sciences) will present the first talk in our Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability, which has become an integral part of our Wednesday Coffee Talks.

Title: "Stakeholder engagement in nature conservation science – need or must?"

Abstract:
Humans' relations with nature were always crucial. This relationship diagonally changed over centuries, from fighting against nature, fighting for fragments of mother nature, inventing and implementing sustainability concepts, and recognizing the role of ecosystem services.
There are always elements of natural environment, that are difficult or impossible to measure, assess, or compare. There are always remaining important and impossible-to-answer questions: Is nature more valuable in places with scarce resources? Land sharing or land sparing is a better approach? Can or should we restrict the development of third-world countries on behalf of sustainibility? On the one hand, academic discourse cannot follow the information needed at speed, and scientific evidence and consensus often missing, when some dogmas are already accepted and spread to the public. On the other hand, there is always pressure from the business side – with apparent interests in favor of some aspects of nature or environmental protection.
More than ever, academic researchers dealing with nature conservation-related issues need to be inter- and transdisciplinary, and (or most of all) cooperation with a wide range of stakeholders is needed. Researchers must overcome their comfort zone, study new skills and know-how, and improve cooperation skills and attitudes to achieve this.  Socially engaged research – where academic researchers co-create and cooperate with stakeholders, which might offer a win-win for successful nature conservation.

Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability
As part of the ongoing commitment of the TUM-IAS to foster scientific exchange and professional networks, the Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability aims to bring together scientists from research institutions in Eastern, Southeastern, and Central Europe to discuss topics related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. This seminar series is a first step to bridge the geographical and academic gaps in order to create a scientific network, and encourage joint research initiatives and build lasting collaborations for a more sustainable future.

THE TUM-IAS WEDNESDAY COFFEE TALKS

Every Wednesday after lunch, it's all about a new topic - current research highlights at TUM, insights into the work of our Fellows from all over the world, sometimes even topics not usually found at TUM, such as history or theology.

The talks held online start every Wednesday during TUM lecture time at 13:00 CE(S)T. Everyone is welcome - TUM researchers of all levels, students, visiting scholars, and anyone interested!

Each final Wednesday of the month, a topic related to the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals will be featured as a part of the Seminar Series of European Universities on Sustainability, a new initiative of the TUM-IAS in partnership with universities across Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe.
