Quantum Matter

The focus group Quantum Matter pursues the consequences of quantum entanglement and the non-local character of genuine quantum phenomena in bulk materials. The objectives of the focus group are the experimental identification and exploration of novel electronic phases starting from well-understood forms of charge and spin order. A prime example are metals near magnetic quantum phase transitions, notably magnetic instabilities in the zero-temperature limit that are accessed by non-thermal control parameters such as high pressures, high magnetic fields or chemical composition. Because the conduction electrons carry both charge and spin degrees of freedom the abundance of magnetic quantum fluctuations originating at quantum phase transition entail strong electronic correlations with new energy scales, as well as the formation of novel states of matter, where unconventional superconductivity may be the most prominent example.

The focus group Quantum Matter combines unique expertise in state-of-the-art neutron scattering methods with studies of bulk properties, both under extreme conditions (low temperature, high magnetic fields and high pressure), as well as high-quality material synthesis between Hans Fischer fellow Dr. Marc Janoschek and TUM host Prof. Christian Pfleiderer.
